The big move

For the past week, I’ve been working on swapping my front room with my back room.  I’ve been wanting to do this for awhile – over a year – but I kept running into resistance from other family members (..ahem… DH).  But after some more arm twisting, we agreed to swap the rooms.  Before the move, my front room – the room people walked into when they came in the front door – housed my computer, the Wii and Dan’s toys.  It was usually a big mess.  It was not an easy room to walk into every day nor was it a room conducive to having people sit down when they came over.  Typically people would stand around at the front door and stare at my big mess.  lol!   I was just tired of it.

I took before photos – but I took them on my regular camera and for some reason my laptop isn’t reading my SD card this morning.  The drive isn’t even coming up.  The SD card is working because my camera recognizes it and usually my laptop recognizes it fine.  Not going to be good if my SD reader is bad on my laptop.  So I have no before photos to show you… only photos of my work in progress…the photos below were taken on my iPhone as I went along and are quite blurry.  I have an older blog post (opens in new window) that has two photos of what my office and front door could get like although they weren’t this bad when I started my move…it’s always nice to have a point of reference. lol!

DAY 1 – Tuesday – The plan

The first thing I did was put together a planning sheet of where everything was going to go. I’m usually pretty good at visualizing things like this in my head… but I will still plan out diagrams on paper and work things out from there.  I try to make my diagrams as close to scale as I can but they aren’t perfect.

This was my original new front room layout.  It stayed exactly how I planned it out.

Gmail Crashes Firefox When Closing Tab

Just wanted to post a solution I found to the highly annoying problem of GMail crashing Firefox when you close a GMail tab or move away from GMail.

If you google for this error, you’ll see most sites agree, including the Mozilla team, that the GMail Talk Plugin is causing this error. The solution is to disable Google Talk.  Just look under your Add-ons and uninstall GoogleTalk.

The only problem is I don’t have Google Talk installed.  So now what?

To find out that GoogleTalk is definitely the cause, you’ll first need to check the firefox crash report to make sure it is reporting GoogleTalk or UserCallWinProcCheckWOW. You need to report the error using the Mozilla Crash Reporter (the box that pops up on a crash that asks if you want to report the error).  Report it and then look at the crash log.  If you don’t report the error, it will not appear in your crash log.

Took the plunge and changed to GMail

Yesterday after fighting with Thunderbird yet again, I decided to take the plunge and switch my email over to GMail.   Jeanine has been using GMail exclusively for over two years (I think it’s been that long now) ever since her last Outlook crash.   I wasn’t ready for GMail then and GMail wasn’t ready for me.  It’s come a long way in the past two years.

I don’t know if I like the idea of storing my personal emails on an online/public server.  But I do like the idea of being able to access them wherever without having to know all my individual email passwords off the top of my head.  I have always kept a folder of passwords to my various hosting accounts and clients hosting accounts in Thunderbird.  I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to move those emails over to GMail or not.  I’m probably just being paranoid as everything is out there these days – much more bothersome than some hosting passwords.

I spent a good chunk of time researching yesterday how to move my existing email over.  I periodically remove old e-mails (like once a year) where I go through a serious purge.  But on a daily basis, I’m not so good at regularly deleting crap I don’t need.  With GMail, I already see that changing – select ALL – DELETE – is a very nice option.  LOL!

After going back and forth with a few “programs” that would import e-mail into GMail, I decided to opt for using Thunderbird to do the import.  I setup an IMAP account for my GMail account in Thunderbird.  I could see all the GMail “labels” and I was able to create new ones on the fly right from Thunderbird.  Then it was a matter of drop/dragging the  folders and e-mails right into the GMail labels.  The process went rather smoothly.   I created filters on the GMail side as I went along and this morning have been creating some new ones on the fly as I receive e-mails.  The process has been remarkably painless for me.

Vonage

I have had Vonage phone service since January 2006.  I believe at that time, Vonage had been around for a year or so.  I remember at the time, I was completely fed up with Comcast (and prior to that AT&T) and their billing.  Very overpriced.  So I took the plunge and switched.  I have never looked back.

On Friday, I had to call Vonage and cancel my business line and fax line.  I figured they’d some how screw it up and cancel my main line.  I also wasn’t looking forward to speaking to someone who had difficulty speaking and understanding English.  I had been dreading this call for a few weeks now.  They bill all customers on the 4th of the month, so I knew Sunday was my billing day.  So I called.

My plan was to make two phone calls.  One to cancel the business phone line and one to cancel my fax line which was attached to my home plan.  I wasn’t trusting that the person would not get “confused” during the call and screw it up.  I’m so trusting of customer service people. NOT.

…it’s obvious that you’re not performing…

I think I’ve been found out… by myself?…hmmm

Today’s Horoscope

You’ve decided to blow the whistle on yourself, Jen! All of a sudden, it’s obvious that you’re not performing as well as you should be. It is time to put the legendary Capricorn self-discipline to work. You may change your work methods, budget your money more carefully, or diversify your activities. Perhaps you’ll reorganize your team at work. All sorts of solutions are available to you.

Yes.  It’s called procrastination and laziness… two of my most favorite words in the world.  lol!

I think I like this one better.

Honor your contract with yourself. Respect your own desires.

Yes.  I need to respect my own desires more.  I know I do.  It seems like the universe is trying to tell me it is time for a change.

Making a hosting change

Well the time has finally come… the time to say goodbye to the dedicated server. I can’t believe I’m blogging about this – admitting it to myself was hard enough.  Maybe putting it out there for everyone to see will help me move past it.

After some soul searching and serious thinking for the past few weeks, I have decided that I need to get rid of my dedicated server. In the next couple of weeks, I’m going to be moving my personal websites to a shared environment and getting rid of my hosting clients. I still have a few from the RTech days – like 5.  But I simply can’t afford the server anymore – for the first time in almost 10 years. My online “business” isn’t really a business anymore… economy or poor choices or laziness or whatever… the fact is I am not making enough money to cover the server anymore. And that has been incredibly hard for me to admit to myself let alone blog about it… So I’m going back to basics for awhile which means getting rid of most of my business expenses including the server. The few hosting clients I have just don’t cover the cost of the server for the year and my income isn’t doing that either anymore.

I have been running some form of online business since 2000. I started with web design and then grew it to be more of a small biz hosting service. Hosting got way to stressful for me. As more and more of my clients were starting to make good money from their websites the need to be able to offer real 24/7 support increased. And by the end of 2004 after losing hard drives on 3 different servers it was time to call it quits. I probably could have grown the biz by adding staff but the reality was I didn’t want the stress that comes with running a hosting business anymore.

Since then I have been focused more on designing and for the past 2 years, I have put A LOT of money into getting a licensing business off the ground… and it just isn’t getting there right now. I honestly think we put the horse before the cart and went wild with spending instead of growing the biz a little first. We had “licensing educated” people tell us that we needed to invest a lot upfront – money to trademark , money for lawyer contract, money for “coaching”, money for tradeshows.  HA!  Maybe the trademark and the contracts piece was worth it but I think we spent way to much money on “coaching” which didn’t end up paying for itself – in my opinion – and we probably didn’t need to exhibit that first year like we did. A lot of the coaching was just common business sense and often on phone calls I would get frustrated because we weren’t learning anything all that new.

I have always built foundations before spending a lot of money to grow my businesses but in this case I spent goober money without having a base to support the everyday expenses of running it. A hard lesson for me I guess. Decisions that if I had to do them over again I would choose differently. We dug ourselves a huge hole and have been trying to dig ourselves out during the worst economy in my lifetime. So I made the decision to go back to grass roots – somewhere I haven’t been since I started my first online business in 2000. I’m getting rid of all my heavy business expenses including the server.

Back in April, Rick and I finally cleaned up our personal finances and they have stayed cleaned. We paid off our car, our HELO, refinanced, and put our expenses in order.  I even blogged about it – here. We are now living on a cash basis and only charge gas each month. I really do not want my biz expenses creeping into our personal finances especially now that they are back on track. We still have a few bumps every now and then and are learning how to be cash base again but I can’t and won’t go back to the financial nightmare we had been living for the past 3 years.

So… this means that my biz expenses have to be drastically cut to the point where any money I bring in can start paying down that debt not just breaking even.  So for the first time in almost 10 years, I am going back to shared hosting which trust me has not been an easy decision at all for me.

I have been looking at HostGator as a possible host to transfer to. I still can’t believe their plan and I’ve always been of the opinion that those plans fail. However, they have been around for awhile and are not fly-by-night. I’m sure there will be bumps in the road – like servers going down because the load is crazy… but if I’m just hosting myself, it’s not a such a priority at this point. They seem to have a decent reputation and have been around awhile. Cost is just a bigger concern for me right now. Anyway, I am planning on moving all of my personal accounts over to them within the next few weeks.

As an aside to all this – When I was at my cousins wedding reception this past Sunday, my aunt made a comment to me that in the moment I laughed off.  But it’s been nawing at me over the past few days.  I had told her that Jeanine was going to have to start looking for freelance work outside of KV because KV was just not bringing in money right now.  She said “Yeah, she needs to find a way to earn real money and stop playing business with you”….  hmm… I’m sure she didn’t mean that in a hurtful way but it has made me stop and wonder if that is what I look like to my family – outside of Rick who has always supported me in whatever I’m doing.  I’m “playing business”??  I have NEVER thought that EVER.  In fact, I have always considered RTech incredibly successful for just being a little company that a stay at home mom raising twins who were under 4 at the time.  I created a business that I eventually turned around and sold.  Not for a crazy sum but for a few tens of thousands.   I built something that someone else saw enough value in to want to buy it.  That has to count for something.

Part of me is sad and frustrated with myself that it got to this point.  The other part is actually happy because it’s like a fresh start.  I have reinvented myself before and I can certainly do it again.

RANT: Defying Gravity

Two posts in one day… wow… but I just had to take time to have a major rant…

I am SO TIRED of investing my time watching a new TV series only to have the network pull the plug before the season even finishes.  This seems to becoming more and more the norm these days.  Networks are all about instant gratification and any show that is not an “immediate” number pull gets canceled while shows that “used to be great but now suck” stay around and die a slow death.

This season ABC came out with a new series Defying Gravity.  It’s been really good so far – a show we look forward to watching every week.  It’s been one of the better shows to come out in a long time.  But as usual it’s already in cancellation talks – they might not even show all the made episodes.  Nice.

The network advertising for Defying Gravity has been poor at best as was the initial release date of the show.  It’s an ABC new show.  Have you even heard of it?  Hopefully some of you have… but if not… check it out.  It’s a good show.  But the show started its season so early in the fall schedule (abnormally out of sync – it has already aired 8 episodes) that most people weren’t ready for the “new shows” and were still in the summer mindset. This show could be great and have a tremendous following if it was advertised properly and put in the correct fall schedule.

Why should viewers invest their time watching new shows when these networks don’t give the new shows a fighting chance to survive? LOST’s first season wasn’t all that great. It wasn’t until end of season 2 and the beginning of season 3 where it really picked up its steam.  In fact if I recall correctly, LOST was on the chopping block at one point too.  But LOST has got to have one of the biggest cult followings ever.  The internet made that show.

Networks are starting to make a habit out of coming up with great new – unique – shows and casts and then cutting the legs out from under them before they have a chance to really succeed.  As a viewer, I’m beginning to not trust the networks.   This is 4th or 5th show in the past year that had potential to be great (good premise, great cast, great acting) but was canceled.  Who the hell needs another “reality” show… I for one can do without.

We started watching Kings (an NBC show) – another show that had a very unique premise and good acting but poor advertising and poor time slot – CANCELED.

We used to watch the new Knight Rider series (an NBC show) with the kids last season.  It wasn’t great on plot or acting but it was a decent family show one the kids really enjoyed – CANCELED.

We watched Terminator: the Sara Connor Chronicles (FOX show) – another one the kids liked.  This one was actually starting to get decent with an interesting plot – CANCELED.

I’m almost afraid to even mention Merlin (NBC show) that we have been watching.  It’s been very good and the kids really like it.  We are fearful this one will be canceled too.  Sad.

My all time favorite… this one was painful… Battlestar Galactica (SciFi) – CANCELED.   But at least in this case, SciFi gave it a “final (short) season” to allow the series to wrap up the plot and tie everything together.  They did that well so I at least have that… but was it really necessary to cancel a great show like that?  I mean it was one of the best SciFi shows on the SCI-FI channel!  What more do you want, network?

SciFi also canceled Stargate Atlantis for no real reason –  it was just too successful and too costly to make.  Right.  Loved that show too.  And the irony here is that just like Battlestar Galactica, they were going to turn around and produce a spin-off to the series.  Why the spin-offs?  Why not keep the original shows considering they were still good – in both cases.  Incidentally, whatever did happen with Caprica?  They advertised that one to death during the final days of Battlestar but then nothing ever materialized.  I know they DVD’d the movie but I thought a series was in the works.  Must have gotten canceled based on poor DVD sales.  LOL!   I think SciFi has another Stargate spin off series in the works too.  But seriously? Why would I want to invest the time in a show that is just going to get canceled when it starts to get good.  I’m so tired of being played a fool.

Speaking of rants and SciFi…. the SciFi channel drives me nuts.  They are supposed to be a SciFi station but all they play is their own homegrown movies that are awful.  I mean utter CRAP!  The great sci-fi shows of the past and present are no where to be seen in their programming.  It’s truly disgusting from a sci-fi fan point of view.  And what is up with that new “SyFy” logo?  How stupid is that name?  SYFY?  You have got to be kidding!

… but hey they got their trademark now so it most have been a great strategic move… um… not.

Friday Brain Dump…

Brain Dump… I came across that term sometime this week in regards to thinking your business plans out.  I think it was mentioned on one of the linkedin groups I subscribe to.  I don’t recall.  The idea is to just write everything down that you could think of regarding getting your business started, back on track, or whatever… a brain dump.  So I thought I’d do a little Friday Brain Dumping.

ENABLING – I saw a twitter this morning that directed you to a great site whose focus is on finding free commercial use fonts.  So I spent a good chunk of this morning downloading.  lol!  If you are in need of some fonts, check out Font Squirrel.  Great stuff!

After I grabbed a good amount of fonts, I didn’t want to unzip them all individually… I am lazy (just ask Jeanine)… So I came across BitZipper (free trial) that will unzip files in a batch.  I checked WinZip but didn’t see that option.  BitZipper worked like a charm.  I might just have to buy it now for all my batch unzipping. lol!

Last Friday, I spent three hours (yes 3!) weeding the front yard.  I ended up with an entire 33 gallon garbage can filled with just weeds… crazy… Today, the lawn looked pretty good and I only was out there for 30 minutes weeding.  I’m hoping to get a little time over the weekend to weed some in the back yard before they overrun my flowers.  My allergies have been crazy bad this year and I have been living on Zyrtec every day practically.  Hopefully that dependence will STOP soon!!!

What a great start to the day… lol!

I came across another twitter link to this No Spec blog post. Back in the day (and I’m talking years and years ago) when I kept up with the web design industry and was a real web designer, I was a firm believer in not doing work on spec.  And if the website was a small one, I often made the client pay 100% upfront (for a one-two page site).  I never showed a design to a client on spec. EVER.

Fast forward several years (showing my age…) in the licensing business, spec work runs rampant.  Do you or don’t you?  A year ago, when Kristy Valshan signed our first licensing contract, we asked for an advance.  That is getting much harder to do as time goes on.  Manufacturers no longer just make a product and go out and sell it.  More often than not, they pitch a digital rendition to the buyer and if there is interest, move on to the next stage and present a physical comp and if the buyer likes it then they move to the final production stage.

We have been caught both ways…. getting an advanced for specing a product that ended up with a warm fuzzy YES from the buyer only to be produced and the buyer not moving ahead with the order (thank goodness we got an advance or we would not have gotten paid for any of our work).  We have also been on the end of doing digital spec work, having it pitched and getting a warm fuzzy YES from the buyer, only to lose the order in the next physical comp stage because we wouldn’t do the physical comp without getting paid for our time. (In that case, the manufacturer did the physical comp which the buyer turned down)  It’s an incredibly fine line to walk in the licensing industry.  It seems more and more companies are looking for the designer to invest their time into a pitch (unpaid time) before they even find out if there is going to be a product at all.

I think for myself, I am starting to lean more towards providing a digital comp of a product (as we have found that it’s hard for the manufacturer to envision our designs on their own products so we have to do it for them) and then depending on the company (large vs small, art dept vs none, big deal vs small change), we might push for an advance to do the physical comp or let the company do the physical comp and hope for the best.  We have been burned both ways so I don’t have an answer for every situation.  It seems every situation is truly different and we are definitely still feeling ourselves out in this industry.

Speaking of licensing, I was fortunate to be able to participate in Jeanette Smith’s licensing workshop this week.  She offered a three day (2 hour per day) mini-camp on licensing (general, sales and contracts).  A lot of it is common sense and just doing it, but it’s still really great to listen and get re-energized and know that you really are on the right path.  I do that with Dave Ramsey too.  Even though I read his books and know the plan, it’s still nice to listen to his radio show once a week and stay on track with the plan.  Get energized!!

I am very excited to be flying out next Friday to stay with Jeanine and go to the stationery show.   Usually by now, we would have seen each other face to face – it’s been since September since I was out there.  We do “see” each other though via video – that has made things much easier for us.  When we need to show something to each other, we can just hold it up for the camera.  Lol!   We have been working like mad this week to prep for some meetings while I’m in town.  It’s been awhile since we were actively out there pushing our licensing and its been really great to get going again!

Well there you have it… my Friday Brain Dump… lol!  Hope you enjoyed it and thanks for playing. 😉

Happy Friday!

So “My Best Friend” Married a Sociopath….

So “My Best Friend” Married a Sociopath was not well-received at the box office. Released in the year 2000, it grossed a total of only $500 in 50 theaters on its opening weekend, well below the $20 million it thought it was entitled to.  The film had a very mixed reception – highly praised by other sociopaths yet a strong adverse reaction from the average movie goer.

Ed Gein gave high marks to the sociopath for being “an exceptional psycho viciously trapping his victim while leaving her to grasp wildly for individuality and empowerment”.  Others have given the sociopath poor marks for its misguided ways and high opinion of itself.

As the story unfolds it becomes quickly apparent that the victim needs to get away – far away – from the sociopath.  I must give So “My Best Friend” Married a Sociopath, a whopping 11 stars, for its incredibly accurate depiction of every day life being trapped with a psycho that everyone else views as “very strange but okay”.  Until you are fully submerged in the every day dealings of the victim, you can’t begin to comprehend what life is truly like with a sociopath.  This movie was extremely eye opening, gut wrenching and an every day emotional roller coaster.  It is not something for the faint hearted.

Glibness and Superficial Charm (8/10 stars)

Manipulative and Conning (10/10 stars)
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.

Grandiose Sense of Self (10/10 stars)
Feels entitled to certain things as “their right.”

Pathological Lying (10/10 stars)
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests
.

Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt (10 stars)
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

Shallow Emotions (11/10 stars)
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.

Incapacity for Love (10/10 stars)

Need for Stimulation (10/10 stars)
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.

Callousness/Lack of Empathy (11/10 stars)
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others’ feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.

Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature (10/10 stars) Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.

Irresponsibility/Unreliability (11/10 stars)
Not concerned about wrecking others’ lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.

Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity (10/10 stars)

Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle (11/10 stars)
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.

Does not perceive that anything is wrong with them (11/10 stars)

Authoritarian (11/10 stars)

Secretive (10/10 stars)

Paranoid (10/10 stars)

Exercises despotic control over every aspect of the victim’s life (10/10 stars)

Extreme narcissism and grandiose (11/10 stars)
